MOTS-c (Mitochondrial Open Reading Frame of the 12S rRNA-c) is a synthetic mitochondrial-derived peptide (16 amino acids; MW ≈ 2,174.5 Da) originally identified through academic research at the USC Leonard Davis School of Gerontology. It is encoded within the mitochondrial 12S ribosomal RNA region — one of the first peptides identified as encoded by the mitochondrial rather than nuclear genome.
